Renting a car in Morocco as a tourist: a complete guide
Licence, deposit, insurance, road rules and driving tips: everything a tourist needs to know before renting a car in Morocco.
Morocco is best discovered by car. Here is what a foreign visitor needs to prepare — documents, budget and local driving — to rent without surprises.
Documents and eligibility
A valid driving licence is mandatory. European, North American and many other licences are accepted directly; some agencies ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well, especially for non-Latin-script countries. Ask the agency at booking time on Udrive.
The minimum age is usually 21 for standard categories, with at least one year of driving history. Some categories (premium saloons, SUVs) require 25 or more depending on the agency. These conditions appear on each vehicle listing before you confirm.
Bring: driving licence, ID or passport, and a bank card in the main driver's name for the deposit. The deposit is held by pre-authorisation and released after a damage-free return — release timing varies by bank.
Budget and expected costs
The displayed daily rate rarely covers everything. Add: the immobilised deposit (not spent but unavailable), an excess-reduction option if you want to limit exposure in a scrape, and out-of-hours fees if you pick up or return outside opening times.
Fuel is almost always your responsibility; check type (petrol, diesel, hybrid) at pickup. Motorway tolls are extra — carry Moroccan cash for non-automated booths. For a road trip with multiple legs, estimate mileage and take an unlimited offer when available.
Driving and practical tips in Morocco
Morocco drives on the right, as in Europe. Speed limits are signed and enforced by fixed and mobile cameras. In cities, take care: mopeds, pedestrians, cyclists and animals often share the road outside motorways. In old medinas, traffic is regulated or closed to vehicles.
National roads between major cities are generally in good condition. Tourist tracks toward natural sites (desert, Atlas) may need higher ground clearance, especially off-season. Check conditions with the agency if you plan off-tarmac stages.
On Udrive, book through verified agencies with clear conditions in French, English or Arabic. Keep the assistance number and your confirmation accessible throughout the rental.
