Car rental in Marrakech: a practical guide 2026
Medina, Atlas, Ouarzazate: how to rent a car in Marrakech, choose city or Menara airport pickup, and plan your excursions.
Marrakech is one of Morocco's most in-demand rental destinations. Here is how to pick the right pickup point, which car to book and how to prepare for Atlas drives or the Atlantic coast.
City or Menara airport: how to choose
Landing at Marrakech-Menara (RAK), airport pickup saves you a taxi with luggage. The trade-off: some agencies charge an airport supplement or out-of-hours fee for late arrivals. Compare the Marrakech airport hub and the city catalogue for the same dates.
For a stay centred on the medina, Guéliz or the palaces, a city pickup (agency branch or hotel delivery) can be more convenient and sometimes cheaper. Note your accommodation at booking time — some agencies deliver directly.
Book early, especially in peak season (spring, autumn, holidays). Marrakech is one of the destinations where SUVs and automatics go first. If your preferred category is sold out, widen your search by a few days.
Which car for which routes
**In the city**: a compact city car covers the outer medina, souks and daily trips between Guéliz and Hivernage. Note: the medina core is closed to vehicles. Choose an automatic if you are unused to manual driving in traffic.
**Atlas and day trips**: for roads to Ourika, Aït Benhaddou or the Tichka pass, an SUV or high-clearance saloon is advisable, especially off-season or after rain. Secondary tracks to some mountain villages need a suitable vehicle — check conditions with the agency.
**Coastal road trip**: Marrakech–Essaouira–Agadir is a classic loop. Plan for unlimited mileage or check the included package: the return trip easily exceeds 500 km depending on your stops. Read the one-way return rules if you drop off in another city.
Driving and parking in Marrakech
Traffic can be dense around Djemaa el-Fna and main tourist arteries, especially in the evening. Use signed car parks rather than informal parking — fines apply in regulated zones.
Udrive rental conditions detail geographical restrictions (some off-tarmac tracks may void the warranty): read them before leaving the road. Keep the assistance number handy, especially in areas with patchy coverage.
On Udrive, verified partner agencies in Marrakech publish conditions before you confirm. Compare excess, deposit and inclusions before ranking offers by price alone.
