Car rental inspection in Morocco: a complete checklist
Pickup and return inspection for a rental car in Morocco: what to check, photograph and sign to avoid disputes.
The inspection report is the only objective evidence in a dispute. Here is what to check at pickup and return so you hand the car back without surprises.
At pickup: check before you sign
Before taking the keys, walk around the car with the agent: bodywork (scratches, dents, chips), windows, mirrors, rims and tyres. Report any issue and make sure it is written on the contract or inspection sheet before you sign.
Photograph every angle of the vehicle, including the roof and door sills if you suspect interior damage. Timestamp photos with your phone — they are your best evidence if a dispute arises later.
Also check the fuel level noted in the contract, the presence of a spare wheel, first-aid kit and warning triangle, and the odometer reading at departure. These items appear on the signed contract and are the reference in any fuel or mileage dispute.
During the rental: keep a record
In the event of an accident or scrape, however minor, call the agency immediately and complete a joint accident report. Do not settle anything directly with the other driver without going through your insurance or the agency — this can void your cover.
If the car breaks down, contact the assistance number on your contract before calling an outside provider. Costs not pre-authorised by the agency are rarely reimbursed. Keep all fuel receipts and any emergency-service receipts.
At return: the critical moment
Return the car with an agent present and ask for written confirmation or a signature on the return receipt. Do not hand over the keys without acknowledgement — disputes often arise after departure if the return inspection is not counter-signed.
Show the photos taken at pickup if the agent flags damage you do not recognise. The deposit can only be charged for documented damage not present at pickup. On Udrive, partner agencies commit to a transparent inspection process; read each listing's conditions before booking.
Finally check the fuel level: most contracts require you to return it at the level stated at pickup. A shortfall can trigger a surcharge that may exceed pump price. Keep your last fuel receipt.
