Car rental in Morocco: everything you need to know
Complete guide to renting a car in Morocco: documents, deposit, insurance, airports and tips to avoid surprises.
From Casablanca to Marrakech, a rental car is still the most flexible way to explore Morocco. Here is the typical journey, required papers and pitfalls to avoid.
Why rent instead of other transport?
Trains and shared taxis cover main corridors well, but once you leave city centres — Atlantic coast, Atlas, desert — a private car changes everything. You set your schedule, park near your stay and skip multi-leg transfers.
On Udrive you compare verified agencies across Morocco, with clear pricing and a booking flow designed for French, English and Arabic speakers.
Documents and usual conditions
Bring a valid driving licence (French or foreign, depending on the agency), ID or passport, and often a bank card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Minimum age varies: many agencies require 21, sometimes 23 or 25 for premium categories.
Check licence validity and keep digital copies. Some agencies ask for an international permit in addition; others accept a European national licence alone. Read the vehicle sheet before confirming.
Insurance, excess and deposit
Rentals usually include basic insurance with an excess. Ask for the excess amount, what is covered (glass, tyres, theft) and whether excess reduction is available. The deposit is blocked then released after a clean return.
Photograph the car at handover (bodywork, rims, interior, fuel) and match the check-in report. A solid photo set prevents most disputes.
Where to pick up the car?
Top pickup points include Mohammed V Airport (Casablanca), Marrakech-Menara, Rabat-Salé, Agadir and city centres. Share your flight time: late-night arrivals can add out-of-hours fees.
For a mixed city/road trip, a downtown agency can be cheaper than an airport desk. On Udrive, filter by city then compare delivery options.
Practical tips on the road
Respect speed limits, wear seatbelts and keep vehicle papers handy. Speed cameras are common on Casablanca–Rabat–Marrakech highways. Refuel before long stretches outside major corridors.
Book early in peak season. A confirmed car reduces arrival stress. Agencies can join via Become a partner to list their fleet for travellers already searching.
